SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The No. 21 Spring Arbor University women's soccer team remained unbeaten with a 2-0 victory over Indiana University Northwest on Saturday evening at the Cougar Soccer Complex.
The Cougars improved to 3-0 on the season with their third consecutive shutout, while IU Northwest suffered its first loss and fell to 2-1-0.
Spring Arbor broke through in the 34th minute behind the first collegiate goal from freshman
Tessa Ponstein.
Sofia Brooks found Ponstein, who beat the IU Northwest goalkeeper with a shot into the upper corner to give the Cougars a 1-0 advantage.
Another first career goal doubled the lead just before halftime. In the 42nd minute,
Ava Unger found the back of the net with a low finish to the far post, sending SAU into the break with a 2-0 advantage.
The Cougars continued to control the match in the second half and kept the RedHawks off the scoreboard to preserve their perfect defensive start to the season. Spring Arbor finished with a 27-3 advantage in shots.
Freshman goalkeeper
Kailey Walcott made two saves before combining with
Mia Warner for the clean sheet. Through three matches this season, Spring Arbor has yet to concede a goal.
The Cougars remain at home Wednesday, Sept. 2 when they host Saint Xavier University at the Cougar Soccer Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
