GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. –
Micah Vasey scored the go-ahead goal in the 78th minute to lift No. 20 Spring Arbor University to a 2-1 road victory over Aquinas College on Wednesday.
Spring Arbor stayed perfect and improved to 8-0-0 on the season, while Aquinas fell to 2-4-0.
The Cougars controlled much of the opening half, outshooting the Saints 12-4 and holding a 5-0 advantage in corner kicks. However, the match remained scoreless until the final minute of the half.
Leo Stravato broke through with just 30 seconds remaining, finding the back of the net to give SAU a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.
Aquinas answered early in the second half to level the match at 1-1.
Spring Arbor continued to create opportunities before regaining the lead in the 78th minute. Stravato set up Vasey for the eventual game-winner, giving the Cougars a 2-1 advantage with 12:25 remaining.
Vasey led the SAU attack with seven shots, including five on goal, while Stravato finished with a goal and an assist.
Caleb Swartzendruber added four shots.
Spring Arbor finished with a 24-9 advantage in shots and put 11 attempts on goal compared to six for Aquinas. The Cougars also held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
Soren Goubely Dondaine made five saves in goal to earn the victory.
Spring Arbor wraps up its non-conference schedule Saturday, Sept. 19 with a road test against No. 12 Olivet Nazarene University.
