Senior DaJuan Jefferson calmly sank two free throws with 4.8 seconds remaining in the game to give the Spring Arbor University Cougars a thrilling 85-84 victory over the University of St . Francis Cougars on Saturday afternoon.
With the game hanging in the balance and the teams trading baskets in the final two minutes of play, it was SAU that was in control with a one point lead and the ball. However, with just 17 seconds remaining St. Francis stole the inbounds pass and scored to take an 84-83 lead. Senior Micah Lancaster penetrated as time was winding down and found Jefferson who was fouled in the act of shooting. A desperation attempt by St. Francis as time expired was unsuccessful.
Jefferson led a balanced attack with a game-high 24 points and career high 17 rebounds. Senior Mike Folkert scored 19 points with 17 coming in the second half behind five of six shooting from three point range. Junior Scott Parrish contributed 17 points and eight rebounds while Lancaster added 16 points and six assists.
Head Coach Ryan Cottingham was pleased with the balance and consistenecy of his team's attack Saturday afternoon, "We are playing at a high level right now with a tremendous amount of confidence." "DaJuan was outstanding, he took his game to another level and turned in the best performance of his career. Seventeen rebounds for a guard who is no taller than 6'1 is amazing." "Scott Parrish also turned in the best game of his young Cougar career. Scott has quietly and steadily improved each and every game."
Coach Cottingham understands how easy it is for his players to look ahead, "There's still a lot of basketball to be played. We certainly don't want to get caught up in looking at the standings. We need to stay focused and take one day at a time. It's essential that we continue to improve."
SAU sits all alone in 3rd place in Mid-Central Conference play at 7-4 and has an overall record of 16-9. The Cougars are off until next Saturday, February 4th when they host the Grace College Lancers at 3:00.
