The Spring Arbor University women's basketball team put together a pretty solid effort against the undefeated Aquinas Saints on Saturday, but fell victim to a good inside out game from the vistors and fell by a score of 53-70.
The first half of the contest was evenly contested with Spring Arbor holding slim a lead through a good part of the period. The Saints turned up the pressure at the end of the half and pulled out to a 10 point cushion (30-20) heading into the break. Both teams shot poorly from the field in the first half with SAU hitting just 8 of the 28 attmepts (29%) and Aquinas connecting on 12 of their 34 (35%).
The second half saw Spring Arbor come out fired up and trim the vistor's lead back down to five points on the strength of some good shooting by junior wing Lyndsey Norman (right). Norman would finish the game with a team-high 16 points on 6 for 14 from the floor. The 5'9 junior also hauled down a game high 10 boards for a double-double performance.
It wasn't to be for Norman and her Cougars on this day however, as Aquinas answered with some hot shooting from behind the three point arc to eventually pull away and season the victory. The visitors were 6 for 11 (55%) from behind the arc in the second half.
Amber Huffman was the only other Cougar to score in double digits as she dropped in 10 points. Mandy Phillips kicked in 8, while junior point guard Kara Buehrer added 7.
Spring Arbor is back in action on Wednesday when they open conference play against the University of St. Francis. The game will be played in the Spring Arbor University Fieldhouse and is scheduled to tip off at 7:00 p.m.
