The SAU women's basketball team welcomed the Siena Heights Saints to campus on Thursday. They knew this was not going to be an easy game, but still the Cougars came out strong.
The first half was well-played by the Cougars, who made 50 percent of their shots, racking up a total of 31 points by halftime. The Saints were hot on SAU's tails, scoring 29 points of their own at the close of the first half.
Unfortunately for the Cougar faithful, SHU came out hard to start the second period and gave the Cougars a run for their money. With the Saints gaining the lead mid way through the half, the seconds eventually ran out for the Cougars to catch up, leaving the final score 64-56.
Spring Arbor's seniors Lindsey Norman and Jen Moor along with sophomore Melissa Tejkl were all key players in the game. Norman and Tejkl both sank six baskets in addition to Moor's three. Norman also made five of her six attempts from the charity stripe. Tejkl led the team in rebounds, rounding up seven loose balls, while sophomore Courtney Smith grabbed six of her own.
"This was a disappointing loss," commented SAU head coach Tara Kreklau. "Give Siena Heights credit, they played well, shot the ball well and kept the pressure on us the entire game. They took advantage of each of our mistakes. We did not have the same level of focus & concentration we had in the previous two games."
Although the loss was upsetting, the Cougars put up a good fight and look forward to their next game against Marian on Tuesday November 25, which will be held away on the Knight's court at 7 p.m.
