Cougars do it again!

For the third time this season, the Spring Arbor University basketball team made a game winning basket in the final seconds to snatch victory from defeat. And on Tuesday night, it was sophomore DJ Baisden's (Munith/Jackson Christian) turn as he sank a three-pointer as the final horn was sounding in overtime to give the Cougars a thrilling 85-83 triumph over the Huntington University Foresters.

Huntington came out on fire in the first half as they shot 57 percent from the field including 56 percent (9 for 16) from long distance and built a 15 point advantage. SAU was able to cut the lead to 47-38 at halftime to remain in striking distance. In the second half, Spring Arbor tightened down their defense and didn't allow the Foresters a single three pointer (0 for 3) as both teams slugged it out. When neither team could finish it in regulation the extra period would be needed to decide the outcome. After Huntington built a five point lead in overtime, the Cougars clawed their way back again and two free throws by senior Dirail Flenorl (Portage/Central) cut the deficit to 83-82 with 45 seconds to play. Huntington was unable to connect on their final possession and SAU snatched the rebound and came down the floor with under 10 seconds remaining. Spring Arbor swung the ball to the right corner to junior Richard Blair (Pellston/Pellston), who passed to senior Kevin Ludwig (Holland/West Ottawa) who then found Baisden all alone for the knockout blow.

Junior Rob Boss (Brighton/Brighton) led four Cougars in double figures with 19 points while Baisden added 13 points and a game-high eight assists. Senior Josh Brand (Flint/Powers) and Blair contributed 11 points apiece. Blair, who played one of the best games of his career, recorded a game-high five steals and dished out three assists in 32 minutes of action.

"It was just another great team effort. I thought Baisden played well and Blair was outstanding. I'm happy for Richard because he works so hard and comes ready to play every night. He's eager and willing to do whatever we ask of him and his attitude is always exceptional. He's the ultimate team player!" said head coach Ryan Cottingham

Spring Arbor improves to 17-4 overall and 5-2 in MCC play. The 16th ranked Cougars are off until Tuesday when they travel to Goshen, IN to play the Maple Leafs. Game time is set for 7 pm.
