The Spring Arbor University women's basketball team put together a couple of solid efforts over the weekend but could not find a away to bring home a win from the Cornerstone Classic tournament that was being held in Grand Rapids, Michigan.
On Friday the Cougars faced off with a tough Dordt College team that entered the game with a 6-8 overall record. SAU (1-10) hung with the Defenders for the majority of the game and even held a tight three point lead with less than five minutes remaining but could not find the offense they needed in the end and became the victims of a narrow 61-63 defeat.
Melissa Tejkl paced the Lady Cougars with an impressive 17 point, six rebound performance. Alex Glenn chipped in ten points and a steal in support.
On Saturday Spring Arbor faced off with Clarke College in the consolation game. Unfortunately for the Cougars, the result was almost identical, as a Clarke layup at the buzzer handed them a 54-56 defeat.
Tejkl proved consistent, as she dumped in 17 points for the second straight game to lead all scorers. Tejkl also snatched seven boards in the contest. Glenn also proved to be tough on day two, as she backed up her ten point performance on Friday with a 14 point effort on Saturday. Fellow freshman Trisha Seilhamer picked up 11 points in support and grabbed six boards as well.
Spring Arbor fell to 1-12 overall with the loss and will now take a few days off to celebrate the Christmas holiday. The Lady Cougars return to action January 5th when they welcome MCC foe Bethel College to campus for a 7 p.m. tipoff.
