A nine point first half deficit was too much for the Spring Arbor University women's basketball team to overcome as they dropped a 45-58 MCC conference game to the Huntington University Foresters last night.
The first half was fairly evenly contested, as each team shot a cool 35% from the field in the opening frame. The name of the game was turnovers this night however, and Huntington did a much better job in taking care of the basketball, committing just ten turnovers compared to the 23 committed by the home Cougars.
Spring Arbor actually outshot the Foresters in the second half, connecting on 44% of their attempts (8-18) while Huntington hit the nets at a 31% (9-29) clip. The Cougars could not overcome the extra possessions that the turnovers cause however and were unable to make up any ground.
Melissa Tejkl once again led the Cougars offesinvely, pouring in 12 points of 5 for 11 from the floor. Courtney Smith backed Tejkl up with a near double double performance, netting nine points and grabbing nine rebounds in the contest. Kelly Bruggeman snagged a game high 10 boards.
The Cougars fall to 1-16 overall and 0-7 in MCC loop play with the loss. The Lady Cougars will step outside MCC play this weekend when they welcome Rochester College to campus. The Cougars lost to the Warriors by ten points in the opening game of the season for both teams.
