Poor shooting continues to plague Spring Arbor University's
women's basketball team. The Lady
Cougars fell to the Goshen College Maple Leafs 57-48 Saturday afternoon on
Bockwitz Court in a match-up of the MCC Conference's bottom two teams.
Spring Arbor shot 20% from the field in the first half and
hit only one of 13 (.077) shots from 3-point range which found the Cougars down
30-14 at the break.
Senior, Melissa Tejkl led all scorers and rebounders with 23
points and 14 rebounds. Tejkl was 9-16
from the field and 5-7 from the free throw line. Ashley Stelter turned in her 2nd straight
double digit performance with 11 points on 5-10 shooting.
Coach Tara Kreklau's talk and adjustments at the half made a
difference as the Cougars came out of the locker room with greater intensity
and focus. Down 16-34 just after the
start of the 2nd half, Spring Arbor went on a 19-1 run, including 10
points from Tejkl, seven points from Stelter, and two points from Megan Bement. The scoring spree from SAU cut the Goshen
lead down to one point with 10:30 to go in the game.
The comeback wasn't meant to be as Goshen answered with a
15-4 run of their own to get the lead back to double digits with 5:46 left to
play. Spring Arbor could re-start the intensity
and momentum with time winding down and Goshen picked up their second win in
conference play to tie Spring Arbor at 2-7 and at the bottom of the standings
in Mid-Central College Conference.
Spring Arbor is at home on Wednesday, January 26 when Marian
College visits the campus of Spring Arbor.
Game time is set for 7:00 at the SAU Fieldhouse.
