SPRING ARBOR, MI - Oh, what a way to finish! DJ Baisden led all scorers with 25 points in
his last, regular season home game as a Cougar. Spring Arbor University upset #5 Indiana
Wesleyan University 82-73 in front of a spirited crowd in the fieldhouse at
Spring Arbor University. The win, Spring
Arbor's third in a row, improved the Cougars record to 16-12 and 8-6 in the
Mid-Central College Conference.
Fellow Senior, Willie Pickvet completed his home career with
12 points, four rebounds, five assists, and three steals. Pickvet's efforts moved him to 27th
on the list with 1,151 points.
Baisden connected on 9 of 15 shots from the field, including
3 of 5 from 3-point range. The 25 points
gives Baisden a career total of 1,639 points which places him in 12th
place on Spring Arbor's all-time list just ahead of former teammate, Rob Boss ('10).
"This was an absolutely huge win for us tonight," said an
elated Head Coach, Ryan Cottingham. "I
am so happy for these guys. This is what
it's all about."
Cottingham sat in the press box after the game for a few
moments and watched as the team slowly exited the locker room to greet family
members and friends who waited in the gym and cheered for each member of the
team as they walked into the gym to greet them.
It was a nice scene for a coach to watch.
"Those guys really stepped it up tonight, " Cottingham
continued. "It was really great to see
the younger guys step up and play like men.
I loved it!"
The younger guys Cottingham referred to are Sophomores Chris
Bellamy, Matt Howe, and Matt Van Pelt, and Freshmen Caleb Byers, and Rob
Hogans. All of whom made significant
contributions in the win.
Byers knocked down 12 points hitting four of five shots from
the field, and Rob Hogans scored 10 points.
Defensively, it was a total team effort. Matt Howe and Caleb Byers each fouled out of
the game dealing with IWU's Patrick Hopkins who was a tremendous threat down
low. Hopkins finished with 14 hard
earned points.
Freshman Jordan Weidner led the Wildcats (22-5, 11-2) with
20 points, many coming late as the game was out of reach.
The Wildcats out rebounded Spring Arbor 32-26 but the
difference in the ball game was turnovers.
Spring Arbor limited their mistakes with only nine turnovers to IWU's
17. Both teams shot the ball very
well. Spring Arbor was 30-58 (51.7%) from
the field with Indiana Wesleyan hitting 27-47 for 57.4% from the field.
Spring Arbor will play its final two games on the road
starting with Grace College on Saturday, Feb. 12. Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00 and then the
regular season will end for the Cougars at Huntington College on Tuesday,
February 15 at 7:00 pm.
