GRAND RAPIDS, MI – The Spring Arbor University men's basketball team rebounded from their first loss of the season on Friday evening by claiming a 75-61 victory over the Aquinas College Saints in the Crossroads League/WHAC Challenge at Cornerstone University on Saturday afternoon.
Senior Matt Howe (Gull Lake) paved the way as he scored a game-high 20 points and pulled down a game-high eight rebounds. Junior Rob Hogans (North Farmington) and senior Chris Bellamy (Novi) junior added 13 points and 12 points respectively. Senior Matt Van Pelt (Rockford) and freshman Greg Hamilton (Thornapple-Kellogg) chipped in with nine points apiece. Van Pelt also dished out a game-high six assists.
Spring Arbor held a 31-29 advantage at halftime despite shooting just 35 percent from the field. The Cougars heated up in the final 20 minutes as they shot just over 58 percent from the field to pull away from a very competitive Saints team. SAU was credited with 17 assists against just five turnovers and won the battle of the boards 34-31.
"I was pleased with how our guys responded to a very disappointing performance on Friday evening. We were better in all facets of the game and played a much better as a team," said Head Coach, Ryan Cottingham.
With the victory, Spring Arbor improves to 4-1 on the season and will return home on Tuesday evening to play long-time rival Siena Heights University. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00pm.
