Women's Soccer Records Second Straight Shutout; Blanks Cornerstone 3-0

Junior Ashley DeNio notched her first goal of the season in the fifth minute of play as the NAIA #8 ranked Spring Arbor University women's soccer team dropped previously unbeaten Cornerstone University 3-0 on the road in Grand Rapids, Michigan today.
DeNio got on the end of a corner kick from senior Megan Wegener and nodded the ball past Golden Eagle goalkeeper Kathy Butt for the game winning tally.

The Cougars tacked on another goal just minutes later when Junior Karly Linton played Wegener through the Golden Eagle defense and put her in one on one with Butt. Wegener slotted a low finish to the left corner to make the score 2-0 in favor of the visitors.

Linton finished out the scoring herself in the 28th minute, taking a pass from sophomore Clara Williams and weaving through a gap in the Cornerstone defense before finishing past a sprawling Butt.

The game muddied up from there, as the match became a physical contest with little flow.

Spring Arbor went on to out-shoot Cornerstone 19-4 for the match, and enjoyed a 7-2 cushion in corner kicks as well.

Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Yancer picked up two saves in earning her second consecutive clean sheet.

Spring Arbor improves to 2-0-1 with the win, while Cornerstone falls to 2-1.

The Cougars will have little time to celebrate as they take off for Rochester, New York tomorrow to play in the Roberts Wesleyan Raider Classic. SAU will face off with Daemen College on Friday at 5:00 p.m. before facing hosts Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday at 7:15 p.m. Both schools are provisional members of NCAA division II.
