SPRING ARBOR, MI – Carlie Newman led a quartet of double digit scorers to pace Spring Arbor University to a 76-46 Crossroads League opening victory over the visiting Goshen College Maple Leafs on Tuesday night. Newman poured in 16 points, Jessica Garrison had 15, Rachel Driesenga added 14 and Kylie Townsley chipped in 13 points.
Newman and Townsley hauled in 12 and 10 rebounds as each performed double-doubles on the night. It was the third straight double-double for Newman.
Garrison connected on a short basket after a minute of play, for the first points of the game and the Cougars never looked back and controlled the game for the rest of the way. Spring Arbor enjoyed a 38-20 halftime lead and increased that to the 30 point final score margin.
"We won this game on the defensive end of the floor," said Head Coach Ryan Frost. " We really did a nice job shutting down their scoring options. They face guarded Carlie most of the night and we adjusted to that well. We also had big games by Rachel Driesenga, and Kylie Townsley. We also got some solid play of the bench from Jessica Mabry."
Spring Arbor has beaten the Maple Leafs in four of the last five meetings.
The Cougars improve to 5-3 on the season and 1-0 in the Crossroads League and will visit Huntington University on Wednesday, December 4 at 7:00 p.m.
