NOTRE DAME, IN – Rachel Driesenga hit a jumper with 10 seconds left on the clock to give Spring Arbor University a 59-57 lead over Holy Cross College and Jessica Garrison stole the ball to ice the game for the Cougars for the win. The victory lifts the Cougars to 6-5 on the season.
Carlie Newman and Jessica Garrison provided Spring Arbor with the one-two punch the Cougars needed on the offensive end of the court, Newman poured in 24 points and Garrison scored 22 points for the Cougars.
Trailing the Crusaders 15-19 with 3:28 left in the first half, Spring Arbor scored the last 14 points of the half to head into the locker room with a 29-19 lead.
In the first five minutes of the second half, Holy Cross rallied to tie the game 36-36, but the Cougars took their turn with momentum and reconstructed a 51-41 lead with 7:39 left in the game.
The Crusader's Megan Eve hit a 3-pointer with 3:50 left to tie the score once again at 52-52 and the two teams traded blows to set up the dramatics at the end of the game.
"Carlie (Newman) made a great read off a drive to get Rachel an open shot," said Head Coach, Ryan Frost. "We didn't play great but we got stops when we needed them and Carlie and Jessica (Garrison) shot the ball well."
Garrison and Driesenga each grabbed eight rebounds to pace the Cougars on the boards. Newman had six rebounds.
Spring Arbor will travel to Cornerstone University (7-4) on Tuesday, December 17 for a 5:30 p.m. game in Grand Rapids, MI.
