GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Carlie Newman scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds for her fifth double-double of the season but the Cougars still fell short to Cornerstone University 76-61 on the road.
The first 10 minutes of the game, the play was back and forth with Spring Arbor leading by as many of five points (17-12) with 14:39 left in the first half, and Cornerstone's biggest lead at four points (21-17) after a nine point run over five and a half minutes and with 10:00 left in the half.
The Golden Eagles would maintain a six to eight point lead for the rest of the half until the buzzer went off at intermission with Cornerstone owning a 44-37 lead at the break.
After the half, Cornerstone constructed a 13 point lead with 9:55 left in the game, but the Cougars rattled off three straight 3-pointers by Jessica Garrison, Carlie Newman, and another by Garrison to cut the Cornerstone lead to just four points with 7:17 left.
Unfortunately, Spring Arbor couldn't sustain the run and Cornerstone outscored SAU 16-5 the rest of the way to end the scoring at 76-61.
Kylie Townsley added 14 points for Spring Arbor and Garrison contributed 11 points. Rachel Driesenga put in a solid effort of seven points and seven rebounds for SAU. Karly Bender led the Cougars with four assists.
"I thought we fought hard tonight against a good team," said Head Coach Ryan Frost. "The on-going goal for us as the year goes on is getting the little things right. But I think our effort is there."
The Cougars are off until after Christmas and will play in the SportsONE Classic Tournament in Fort Wayne, IN on December 30-31 against Trinity Christian College, and Indiana Tech. Trinity Christian and Spring Arbor faced each other on November 16 in Spring Arbor and the Cougars fell to the Trolls 48-52
