SPRING ARBOR, MI – Freshman guard Carlie Newman scored 17 points in the final 11 minutes of the game, but it wasn't enough to overcome Huntington as Spring Arbor fell to the Foresters 70-60 on Saturday afternoon. With the loss, the Cougar's season comes to a close with a final record of 10-20, overall and 4-14 in the Crossroads League.
Before the game began, the Lady Cougars celebrated the careers and contributions of five seniors playing in their last game in the Cougar Blue and Gold. Flowers and gifts were presented to Mykahla Frayer, April Adams, Audra Norris, Ana Byrens, and Alex Glenn.
When play began, the Foresters took command early and lead six points on two occasions, but Spring Arbor would respond and tie the game at 20 points each with 9:07 remaining in the first half. The action would remain tight and at the end of the first 20 minutes, Huntington would hold a three point margin over the Cougars 36-33 at intermission.
Starting the second half was where Spring Arbor lost control of the game as after almost nine minutes of action, the Cougars couldn't manage to score a field goal and after that span, trailed the Foresters 34-48.
Newman found her touch and scored 17 of Spring Arbor's last 26 points as the Cougars could only cut Huntington's lead to seven points with 50 seconds remaining. Huntington was solid from the line and would put the game away making seven of their last eight freethrows in the last two minutes of the game.
Newman's led the Cougars with her 17 points while Jenna Jamieson added 15 points and Aimee Konkel scored 10 points.
Seniors Adams and Glenn each scored six points, Norris netted three points, and Frayer added two points in their last games for SAU. Byrens season ended a few games early with an wrist injury and was unable to suit up.
