Cougar Volleyball opens season with day one split at UM - Dearborn

DEARBORN, MI – The SAU Volleyball team started their season at the U of M – Dearborn Tournament and picked up win number one right out of the gate over Lawrence Tech in a thrilling five-set, come from behind grinder.  Set scores for the 3-2 victory were; 23-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-17, 15-13.

Freshman Rebekah Kujat led the Lady Cougar attack with 13 kills in the match.  Emily Verhage and Alyssa Frees each tallied nine kills for Spring Arbor.  Kacy Hersha picked up seven kills.

On the defensive side of the net, Hersha led SAU with a combined seven blocks, Tenille Marowelli was one behind with six blocks.

In the second match of the day for the Cougars, the ladies faced Point Park University out of Pittsburg, PA and found the Pioneers to be disagreeable to the Cougar attack.  Spring Arbor lost in straight sets, 21-25, 22-25, 16-25 to even out SAU's record for the early season at 1-1.

Once again, Kujat led SAU in kills with nine, followed by Marowelli with six kills.

Spring Arbor will continue with tournament action and play two more sets on Saturday with match number one at 9:00 am against St. Catharine College and then the host UM-Dearborn at 1:00 pm
