Cougars survive on the road against Goshen

GOSHEN, IN – The Lady Cougars survived a fast paced dual in Goshen, IN against Goshen College and coming from behind and tripping up the Maple Leafs 91-83.  Four Cougars scored double digits in a balanced effort, including Lindsey Burnside who enjoyed her best game as a Cougar scoring 19 points on seven of eight shooting from the field.

Spring Arbor trailed Goshen for most of the first half, the largest margin of seven points was with 14:36 left in the half, and the Cougars had the lead three times, each by one point and all with less then two minutes left in the half.  The Maple Leafs scored with seven seconds left to lead 40-39 at the half.

Opening the second half, both the Cougars and the Maple Leafs continued the high paced battle, going back and forth until the 12:09 mark when Goshen made a pair of free throws to lead 60-56 over SAU.

Over the next four minutes, Spring Arbor would out-score Goshen 12-1 to lead 68-61 over the Leafs and the Cougars would never relinquish the lead.

Carlie Newman struggled in the first half but would score all 17 of her points in the second half.

Burnside's 19 points was paired with an outstanding day of rebounding as she hauled in a team high 10 boards for her first double-double of the season.

Kylie Townsley continues to play well in her first collegiate season scoring 18 points on seven of twelve shooting from the field.

As a team, Spring Arbor shot an impressive 31 of 57 from the field for 54% which will always help on the offensive end.  SAU shot 23 of 31 from the free throw line.

The 91 points scored by Spring Arbor marked the first time since December 22, 2005 that the Cougars topped the 90 point mark when SAU defeated UM-Dearborn 99-70.  It also improved the Cougars record to 10-11 and equaled last season's mark of 10 wins. SAU is 4-6 in the Crossroads League and moves into solo sixth place in the League.  Goshen falls to 4-18 and 1-9 and are currently at the bottom of the league standings.

The Lady Cougars return home for a Wednesday night game with Huntington University.  Huntington defeated the Cougars 72-49 in Huntington in early December.  The Foresters are currently sitting in third place in the CL standings.
