MARION, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University volleyball team dropped a road match to Crossroads League leader Indiana Wesleyan University in straight sets (25-12, 25-13, 25-20) on Wednesday night.
The Wildcats (21-5, 11-1 Crossroads League) began the match by taking the first two sets, and jumped out to an 11-6 lead in the third frame. However, sophomore Rebekah Kujat helped fuel a 6-1 Cougar run with a pair of kills to even the score 12-12. Spring Arbor continued to battle and trade points with IWU, who is receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 poll, until late in the set. Trailing 19-16, SAU narrowed the deficit to two following a kill from junior Emily Verhage, but the home team would respond by winning six of the next nine points to secure the victory.
Kujat led the way for the Cougars with 10 kills and Verhage followed with four. Sophomore Laura Hardy handed out 11 assists, and Taylor Johnston and Olivia Landis each registered an ace. Defensively, senior Lyndsay Murray picked up a match-high 11 digs while Hardy and Johnston finished with eight and seven, respectively. Sophomore Alexis Long recorded three blocks and freshman Courtney Kyser had two.
Spring Arbor will return home to host Mount Vernon Nazarene University on Friday, Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. before hitting the road again for six straight road matches.
