SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University volleyball tea returned home Wednesday night following a six-match road swing, but dropped a 3-0 (25-16, 25-19, 25-19) decision to visiting Marian University in Crossroads League action.
The Cougars fell behind quickly in the opening set, but used a 5-1 run, fueled by a pair of kills from freshman Olivia Landis, to battle back from the early 11-4 deficit. The home team would stay with the Knights, trailing by just three, 17-14, midway through the set. However, Marian would take eight of the next 10 points to close out the first set.
In the second frame, SAU jumped out to a 4-1 advantage behind kills from Rebekah Kujat and Courtney Kyser. The Knights would slowly climb back, though, eventually grabbing an 11-10 lead. The two teams would trade blows and the lead would change hands a couple more times before MU used another set-ending 8-2 run to pull ahead two sets to none.
Kujat and Kyser, again, helped the Cougars pounce on top of the Knights early in the third set. The Knights refused to go away, though, and would use a lengthy run to go up 17-12 en route to the victory.
Kujat finished with 10 kills to pace the Cougars while freshman Leah Rose added nine. Kyser and Landis followed with six and five, respectively. Sophomore setter Laura Hardy distributed 21 assists. Defensively, senior Lyndsay Murray led the way with 13 digs while Kujat and Hardy picked up eight and seven.
Spring Arbor will travel to the University of Saint Francis on Friday, Oct. 31 before returning home to close out the season against Goshen College on Saturday, Nov. 1 at 1 p.m.
