SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University volleyball team dropped its final match of the 2014 season 3-0 (25-18, 25-20, 25-22) to Goshen College on Saturday.
Before the match, the Cougars honored seniors Betsy Granger and Lyndsay Murray for all of their hard work and dedication during their time with the program.
Trailing 10-7 in the first set, a kill from freshman Olivia Landis sparked a 3-0 run to even the score. Goshen responded with a run of their own, however, to take a lead that they would not surrender.
Kills from Leah Rose, Kayleigh Bytwerk and Murray would propel the Cougars to a 6-4 advantage to begin the second set. The two sides battled back and forth until a late 4-1 run by the Maple Leafs put the set out of reach.
In the third frame, the Cougars would again go toe-to-toe with the visitors, and trailed by just one, 13-12, midway through the set. Freshman Courtney Kyser ignited a run of five unanswered points to give SAU a 17-13 edge. Goshen responded immediately, however, with five consecutive points to retake the lead, and eventually the set, to clinch the win.
Rose, coming off a career-best performance against the University of Saint Francis on Friday night, led the way with 12 kills. Sophomore Rebekah Kujat followed with nine and Landis added seven. Sophomore Laura Hardy handed out 21 assists. Murray ended the afternoon with 17 digs while Kyser had three blocks.
