FORT WAYNE, IN – There might not have been a lot of people who expected the #7 seed, Spring Arbor to leave Fort Wayne with the upset win over the #2 seed, University of St. Francis tonight, but there was a bus full of Cougars who had a quiet confidence that they would catch USF by surprise, and they were right. SAU up-ended St. Francis 63-55 and the season moves on for the Cougars who will face Grace College in Winona Lake, IN on Saturday at 3:00.
Spring Arbor shot 60.5% from the field on 26 of 43 shooting, including an impressive 5-12 (41.7%) from 3-point range.
The Cougars held a small, two-point led after the first half, 31-29, and stretched the lead to eight points (51-43) in the first 10 minutes of the second half, and with only five minutes remaining in the game, Spring Arbor held a double-digit lead, 59-49.
Both teams hit a drought, so to speak, and over the next four and a half minutes, and 0:36 left on the clock, St. Francis managed just two field-goals to SAU's none, but Spring Arbor still owned a six point advantage.
Spring Arbor won the foul game as Collin Hewitt hit both free throws on the first foul and Greg Hamilton made both ends of a double bonus on his trip to the line.
Time ran out with Spring Arbor on top, 63-55.
A determined Rob Hogans poured in 25 points to pace the Cougars and Xavier Prather added 11 to the books.
Spring Arbor advances to the semi-final game against the #6 seed Grace College who upset the #3 seed Huntington Foresters. The game will take place on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in Winona Lake, IN.
