SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University volleyball team was unable to overcome a string of slow starts against Lourdes University on Saturday, as the Cougars fell to the Gray Wolves in three sets (8-25, 17-25, 22-25).
After taking the first two sets, Lourdes (5-5) looked to complete the sweep after opening up a 7-3 lead to start the third frame. However, a 5-0 run by SAU, sparked by blocks from Emily Verhage and Courtney Kyser, and then Rebekah Kujat and Kyser, gave the Cougars an 8-7 advantage.
The Gray Wolves would rally back scoring nine of the next 12 points, to retake the lead, 16-11. Spring Arbor continued to battle, though, cutting the deficit to one at 22-21. The visitors held off the late charge, however, to defeat the Cougars in straight sets.
Kujat had five kills to lead SAU while Olivia Landis and Leah Rose added four apiece. Laura Hardy distributed 10 assists. Defensively, Lyndsay Murray paced the squad with 12 digs. Kyser and Kujat made an impact at the net five and four blocks, respectively.
Spring Arbor returns to the court on Wednesday, Sept. 10 when they host Bethel College in Crossroads League action. First serve is set for 7 p.m.
