SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University volleyball team fell to Bethel College in three sets (25-17, 25-19, 25-15) on Wednesday evening with the Cougars celebrating Senior Night prior to the start of the Crossroads League matchup.
Seniors Kayleigh Bytwerk and Emily Verhage were recognized with their families for all their contributions to the program over the last four years before the match.
The Cougars went back and forth with the Pilots early on, but the visitors would use a 6-1 run to build an insurmountable lead on their way to taking the first set.
After falling behind 2-0 to start the second frame, freshman Kasey Follis served up four straight points to help SAU pull ahead 5-2. The Cougars would play strong to hold the lead throughout most of the set, but a late surge allowed the Pilots to grab a two-sets-to-none lead.
The two teams battled to an 8-8 score early in the third, however, another lengthy run would propel BC to the sweep.
Sophomore Olivia Landis paced the Cougars with nine kills – matching her season-high – while junior Rebekah Kujat chipped in seven. Freshmen setters Annica Stotz and Follis distributed 12 and seven assists, respectively, and Follis added two aces. Bytwerk finished with a match-high 15 digs and Kujat posted three blocks.
Spring Arbor (5-25, 1-15 CL) will travel to Goshen College (15-15, 5-10 CL) on Friday, Oct. 30 before returning home to close out the season against the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) (10-22, 5-11 CL) on Saturday, Oct. 31.
