WINONA LAKE, Mich. – A go-ahead goal for Grace College in the 85th minute sank the Spring Arbor University men's soccer team at Miller Field on Wednesday night as the Lancers held on to defeat the Cougars 2-1.
The loss dropped Spring Arbor to 6-5-2 on the season and 1-2-1 in the Crossroads League while Grace boosted its record to 8-4-0 overall with a 3-1-0 mark in league play.
Morris Kamara put the Cougars in the 28th minute, heading in a cross from Cody Getsinger for his sixth goal of the season. The Lancers answered, though, with goal from Thomas Tydeman just moments later to send the two sides into halftime tied at 1-1.
After 40 minutes of scoreless play in the second half, it looked as if the Cougars were headed for overtime for the third straight match when the Lancers scored the game-winner. After a shot glanced off the post, Grace's Damon Binkley gathered the rebound and ripped a shot from the end line that snuck through and into the far netting.
Spring Arbor recorded a season-high 23 shots compared to GC's 14. The Cougars also held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.
"We are in a very crucial part of our season right now," said head coach Nathan Miller. "We have some problems to solve and need to examine ourselves. We have some obstacles to overcome, perhaps ones we never expected, but I believe it will be that much more special when we do. But there is so much hard work to be done and these men must show a lot of grit to make it happen."
Up next, the Cougars will travel to Mishawaka, Indiana to face off against Bethel College (7-4-1, 2-1-1 CL) on Saturday, Oct. 10 at 7 p.m.
