Men's Basketball falls at Madonna in non-conference finale

LIVONIA, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University men's basketball team dropped a 78-72 decision at Madonna University on Wednesday night to conclude the non-conference portion of its schedule.

Junior Caleb Hogans led the Cougars in scoring with 19 points. Senior Greg Hamilton and sophomore Zach Medendorp also scored in double figures totaling 17 points apiece. Hamilton is now just eight points shy of reaching the 1,000 career points plateau.

Spring Arbor started hot building a 16-9 lead just over six minutes into the contest. Just over two minutes later, the Cougars boosted the margin to double digits, 23-13, after Hamilton buried a three-pointer.

The Cougars' comfortable lead would not last long, however, as Madonna (5-11) began to battle back. After trailing by as many as 11 with 3:50 remaining in the opening half, the Crusaders outscored SAU 13-1 to end the period, including a three from Chris Dierker, who finished with 20 points, with 0:02 left on the clock to give the home team a 41-40 advantage heading into halftime.

Spring Arbor bounced back though early in the second half as Medendorp and freshman Anthony Qasawa hit back-to-back triples to put the Cougars back on top. SAU maintained the lead for much of the period, but the Crusaders refused to go down quietly.

A 7-0 run by Madonna midway through the stanza helped the hosts pull even at 63-63 with 6:17 remaining, and another quick 6-0 scoring spurt would give the Crusaders a lead they would not surrender.

The Cougars pulled with three, 75-72, following a layup from Hogans with 0:30 left, but the Crusaders would convert on their free throw opportunities down the stretch to clinch the win.

Spring Arbor shot 39 percent (24-for-61) compared to Madonna's 44 percent (29-for-66). The Crusaders also held a 43-37 edge in rebounding.

Qasawa chipped in eight points and three assists while junior Thomas Starks hauled in a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with five points.

Spring Arbor (6-9, 0-3 CL) will open the 2016 calendar year with a trip to Winona Lake, Indiana on Saturday, Jan. 2 to take on Grace College (11-4, 1-2 CL). Tipoff is slated for 3 p.m.
