SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – A strong start propelled No. 6 Indiana Wesleyan University to a 77-55 victory over the Spring Arbor University women's basketball team on Saturday inside the SAU Fieldhouse.
Prior to the game, the Cougars honored their three seniors – Lindsey Burnside, LeAnn Porter and Kiara Wright – for all their hard work and dedication to the University and women's basketball program.
The Wildcats, who clinched at least a share of the Crossroads League title today, hit six of their first nine shots to quickly build a 14-2 lead, and would never look back.
After trailing 39-20 at halftime, sophomore Kylie Townsley led the Cougars on a 10-2 run to open the second stanza. Townsley scored the first four points of the run before capping it with a jumper following one of her game-high four steals to close the gap to 11, 41-30, with 14:56 remaining.
Indiana Wesleyan (24-4, 15-1 Crossroads League) halted the charge, though, with five unanswered points and the Cougars would not get closer than 14 points the rest of the way.
Spring Arbor hit just 29 percent (17-for-59) of its field goal attempts while the IWU connected on 55 percent (29-for-53), including 4-for-9 from behind the arc. The Wildcats also held a slight 38-34 edge in rebounding, but dominated the paint, outscoring the Cougars 48-16 down low.
Townsley finished with a team-high 15 points in addition to her four steals. Aimee Konkel and Karle Bender followed with 11 and seven points, respectively. Burnside added six points while hauling in nine rebounds.
Spring Arbor (7-20, 2-14 Crossroads League) will host No. 7 Marian University (24-4, 13-3 Crossroads League) on Wednesday, Feb. 18 before wrapping up the regular season at Mount Vernon Nazarene University (4-21, 1-15 Crossroads League) on Saturday, Feb. 21.
