DEARBORN, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University volleyball team split its first day of the University of Michigan-Dearborn Early Bird Tournament on Friday. The Cougars cruised past the host Wolverines in three sets (25-21, 25-16, 25-20) before fall to No. 15 Madonna University (20-25, 12-25, 20-25).
Leading the attack against Michigan-Dearborn was Rebekah Kujat and Courtney Kyser with nine and seven kills, respectively. Olivia Landis followed with five while Kasey Follis and Alexis Long chipped in three apiece. Annica Stotz dished out 14 assists and recorded a pair of aces.
Leah Rose had 16 kills and Taylor Johnston finished with 10 to pace the Cougars defensively. Landis and Kyser made a big impact at the net. Landis registered 10 total blocks while Kyser closed the match with six.
Up next, Spring Arbor took on one of the top teams in the nation in the 15th-ranked Crusaders. The Cougars played some of their best volleyball of the season, but the Crusaders proved to be too much winning the match in three sets.
Stotz and Follis directed the attack with 13 and 10 assists. Kujat and Rose slammed down nine and eight kills, respectively. Johnston scooped up a team-high six digs and Kujat added four blocks.
Spring Arbor (2-4) will be right back in action tomorrow when it meets Judson University at 10 a.m. followed by a match against Lawrence Tech at 12:30 p.m.
