No. 8 Women's Soccer falls to No. 5 Martin Methodist

COLUMBIA, Ky. – The No. 8 ranked Spring Arbor University women's soccer team concluded play at the Lindsey Wilson Classic against No. 5 Martin Methodist College on Saturday night. The Cougars, coming off a double-overtime draw against the defending national champions Lindsey Wilson College the previous night, dominated the match statistically but ultimately fell to the RedHawks 2-0.

Spring Arbor held a commanding 18-7 advantage in shots, and compiled eight corner kicks while Martin Methodist failed to record one. However, SAU was unable to convert on its opportunities allowing the RedHawks to come away with the victory.

The Cougars put MMC on its heels immediately racking up four shots in the first five minutes, including a rip by Bethany Balcer that was blocked by a RedHawk defender before it could reach the back of the net.

Despite outshooting Martin Methodist 10-4 through the first 45 minutes, the two sides would head into halftime scoreless.

Spring Arbor picked up in the second half right where it left off, recording three quick shots, including two from Renee Broekhuizen that were saved by the MMC goalkeeper. Moments later, though, Martin Methodist tallied the game's first goal.

The Cougars battled to try and find the equalizer, pushing extra attackers forward, but the RedHawks sealed the win with a goal in the 89th minute.

Balcer finished with five shots and Corrie Good had three while four other Cougars registered two. Sarah Yancer made a pair of saves on the night.

Spring Arbor (4-2-1) will return home to host a pair of non-conference foes before opening Crossroads League play. The Cougars will welcome Cardinal Stritch University on Tuesday, Sept. 15 and Point Park University on Monday, Sept. 21.
