FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University women's basketball team cut a 24-point halftime deficit to two with less than a minute to go, but that was as close as it would get as the University of Saint Francis (Ind.) held off the late charge to defeat the Cougars 70-66 on Wednesday night.
Spring Arbor outscored USF 25-11 over the final 10 minutes behind nine points from junior Aimee Konkel, who erupted for a game and season-high 21 points. After a 19-2 run by SAU to start the quarter, the host Cougars saw a 21-point advantage slip to four with 3:13 remaining.
Saint Francis (9-7, 5-2 CL) scored four straight points to increase the margin to eight, but Konkel answered with back-to-back three-pointers to get SAU within two, 68-66, with less than a minute to play. After a pair of free throws by USF, Spring Arbor had one more chance at a game-tying shot, but Konkel's jumper in the closing seconds bounced off the back of the rim and out.
Konkel finished the night hitting a season-best seven three's while also adding three rebounds and three steals. Junior Kylie Townsley and sophomore Autumn Goggin also scored in double figures. Townsley poured in 17 points, while hauling in nine rebounds, and Goggin added 15 points.
Saint Francis took advantage of a slow start by the Cougars, grabbing a 21-10 edge after the first quarter. The home team continued to add to its lead through the second period as the margin swelled to 24, 42-18, at the break.
Spring Arbor began to close the gap in the third quarter. Goggin fueled a 13-3 run to open the period, and the Cougars would trail by 18 heading into the final frame.
Saint Francis shot 54 percent (27-for-50) for the game while SAU was limited to 33 percent (24-for-72) from the field. USF also held a 45-34 advantage in rebounds but the Cougars forced the hosts into more than twice as many turnovers.
Up next, Spring Arbor (9-10, 1-6 CL) will visit Bethel College (7-11, 2-4 CL) on Saturday, Jan. 16 before returning home to host No. 22 Huntington University (13-6, 3-4 CL) on Wednesday, Jan. 20 at 7 p.m.
