MARION, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University men's basketball team knocked down seven three-pointers and shot over 48 percent from the field in the second half, but it was not enough to get past No. 5-ranked Indiana Wesleyan University as the Cougars fell 88-73 on Saturday at Luckey Arena.
Junior Caleb Hogans paced SAU with 19 points on 7-for-14 shooting, including four triples. Hogans also finished with a team-high six assists, four steals and five rebounds. Fellow junior Thomas Starks followed with a season-high 14 points and five rebounds while sophomore Drew Zuidema chipped in 10 points.
Indiana Wesleyan (20-3, 8-3 CL) held a slim 6-4 lead three minutes into the contest, but grabbed control with an 18-2 run over the next five minutes. With 4:15 to play in the half, the Wildcats took their largest lead of the afternoon, 43-22, but Hogans fueled a late charge to close the gap to 12, 47-35, at the intermission.
In the second half, the high-powered Wildcats, who not only lead the conference but rank first in the nation in field goal percentage, started hot hitting four of their first five shots, including a pair of three's, to balloon their lead to 57-35. However, the Cougars would not go away without a fight.
Trailing 65-46, back-to-back buckets from sophomore Zach Medendorp and freshman Anthony Qasawa ignited a run of 12 unanswered points for the Cougars to trim the deficit to seven with 7:18 remaining.
Spring Arbor only trailed by eight with 4:12 to play, but a late 10-2 run by IWU clinched the game.
The Cougars finished shooting 47 percent (24-for-51) from the floor, including 10-for-22 from behind the arc, while the Wildcats shot at a 55 percent (33-for-60) clip. The home team also held a slight edge on the glass hauling in 30 rebounds compared to SAU's 27.
Senior Greg Hamilton and Qasawa added nine points apiece while senior Peter Barry netted seven.
Spring Arbor (6-18, 0-12 CL) will travel to Taylor University (10-14, 4-8 CL) on Tuesday, Feb. 2 before returning home to host No. 22 Grace College (17-7, 7-5 CL) in the Hall of Fame game on Saturday, Feb. 6 at 3 p.m.
