Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Late first half run dooms SAU in loss at #3 Marian

INDIANAPOLIS – The Spring Arbor University men's basketball team started hot and led No. 3-ranked Marian University midway through the first half, but the Knights closed the period on a 13-0 run en route to a 93-81 win over the Cougars on Saturday.

"Marian has some very impressive parts," said associate head coach Brandon Baum following the game. "We could clearly see today why they are so highly ranked."

Junior guard Caleb Hogans dropped a team-best 24 points while also matching his career-high with eight assists. Sophomore Zach Medendorp finished with 16 points going a perfect 7-for-7 from the field. Seniors Peter Barry and Greg Hamilton also scored in double figures with 13 and 10 points.

The Cougars shot 60 percent (21-for-35) in the second half, including hitting 4-of-9 attempts from three-point range.

"Caleb played his best overall game of the year," added Baum. "He did a great job playing composed and taking what the defense gave him. Our assist to turnover ratio was outstanding today. Zach played a very good second half after early foul trouble. He came out with great intensity after half. We are encouraged by several bright spots on our team."

Spring Arbor started quick building an 11-6 lead after a three-pointer from freshman Luke Barber. After Marian (16-2, 4-2 CL) erased the five-point deficit, SAU responded with six consecutive points to grab its largest lead of the game, 19-13, with 10:43 to play in the first half. However, the home team came right back with an 11-0 run and would never trail again. Holding a 34-29 advantage at the 2:54 mark, the Knights would close the period on a 13-0 run to take a commanding 47-29 lead into the break.

Marian boosted its lead to 20 early in the second stanza, but SAU continued to battle its way back. Trailing 60-40 with 16:36 remaining, the Cougars closed the gap to nine with a 16-5 scoring run over a six minute span – highlighted by back-to-back old-fashioned three-point plays by Medendorp and Barry.

The Knights would answer again, however, netting eight straight points to increase the margin to 17 and put the game out of reach.

Dion Smith and Wesley Stowers led four MU players in double-digit scoring with 27 and 21 points, respectively.

Spring Arbor (6-12, 0-6 CL) will continue its stretch against top-ranked opponents by playing host to No. 8 University of Saint Francis (Ind.) (15-3, 5-1 CL) on Tuesday, Jan. 12 at 7 p.m. and No. 12 Bethel College (13-4, 3-3 CL) on Saturday, Jan. 16 at 3 p.m.
