HOW IT HAPPENED
- Spring Arbor pounced on the visiting side early as Aubrey Schierbeek found the back of the net less than eight minutes into the contest. Schierbeek worked her way around a pair of defenders before ripping a shot from the top of the 18-yard box that beat the leaping netminder.
- The Cougars would create a couple more opportunities to add to their lead, including shots by Bethany Balcer and Corrie Good just minutes later that would both rattle off the posts, but were unable to convert.
- Mount Vernon Nazarene put two shots on target in the first 45 minutes, but Ashley Timmons easily corralled both attempts to keep the lead at 1-0 heading into halftime.
- MVNU goalkeeper Madi Moore continued to play well between the pipes stopping a pair of SAU shots early in the second period, but the Cougars were finally able to tack on an important insurance goal in the 61st minute. An in-close shot by Balcer beat Moore, but an MVNU defender redirected the shot away, however, Casandra Besteman was there to finish off the rebound.
- Spring Arbor continued to control possession and tempo throughout much of the half, but a penalty kick was awarded to Mount Vernon Nazarene in 76th minute and the visitors cut the deficit to one. The goal gave MVNU a surge of energy, but the Cougars were able to hold off the charge and secure the victory.
- Timmons ended the night with three saves.
- The Cougars outshot MVNU 27-5 while holding a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.
