FORT WAYNE, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University men's basketball fell 85-59 at the hands of No. 1 ranked University of Saint Francis in its Crossroads League opener on Tuesday night.
Saint Francis, which ranks among the best shooting teams in the country, connected on more than 50 percent (30-for-59) of its shots, including 13 three-pointers, to earn its program-best ninth straight win to start the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- Saint Francis, which was last year's national runner-up, continued its torrid start to the 2016-17 season with its ninth straight victory.
- Zach Medendorp scored the first five points for Spring Arbor to give the Cougars an early lead, but the hosts answered with a 16-2 run and never back.
- Saint Francis led by as many 18 in the first half but Xavier Prather and Paul Marandet sparked a late scoring surge, and Drew Zuidema hit a three-pointer in the closing seconds of the period to trim the deficit to nine, 44-35, at halftime.
- Coming out of the break, however, the home team continued its red-hot shooting and slowly began to pull away.
- Medendorp finished with a season-high 19 points to pace Spring Arbor. Marandet and Caleb Hogans added eight points and three assists apiece while Thomas Starks chipped in seven points and four rebounds.
- Spring Arbor was limited to 37 percent (22-for-59) shooting from the field.
- Saint Francis held a slight advantage on the glass, out-rebounding SAU 38-31.
FOR SAINT FRANCIS
- Kyle Sovine led Saint Francis with 19 points on 8-for-11 shooting. He also grabbed eight rebounds.
- Three other Cougars finished in double figure scoring, including Evan Henry with 15 points, Kegan Comer with 13 and Chandler White with 11.
- Saint Francis, which ranks second in the nation in three-point field goal percentage, connected on 52 percent of its shots from behind the arc hitting 13 triples on the night.
UP NEXT
Spring Arbor will play its next two contests at home starting with Taylor University (8-0, 1-0 CL) on Tuesday, Nov. 29 at 7 p.m. The Cougars will then welcome Marian University (7-3, 0-1 CL) to town on Saturday, Dec. 3 for a 3 p.m. tipoff.
