Hogans scores career-high 32 to lead Cougars past Marian on Senior Day

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Junior Caleb Hogans was a one-man wrecking crew, dropping a career-high 32 points to lead the Spring Arbor University men's basketball team to an 89-85 win over Marian University on Senior Day Saturday.

Hogans scored 20 of his points in the second half, including eight during the final three minutes. He went a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line down the stretch to help the Cougars hold off a late charge by the visiting Knights.

Hogans helped Spring Arbor get off to a fast start capping a 7-0 run to open the game with a lay-in. The Cougars continued to lead throughout most of the first half until an 8-1 scoring spurt by Marian gave the Knights a 35-32 advantage with 4:25 left in the opening period.

Sophomore Drew Zuidema would answer for SAU, though, knocking down a deep three-pointer to even the score, and the Cougars would tally 10 of the next  14 points to take a 45-39 lead into the locker room.

Spring Arbor led by as many eight in the second stanza, but Marian battled its way back and carved the deficit to one with five minutes remaining. The Knights would then force a Cougar turnover and convert on the other end to grab their first lead, 74-73, since the 4:25 mark in the first half.

The Cougars remained calm though and senior Peter Barry would answer with bucket on the ensuing possession to jump back in front. After a defensive stand, freshman Anthony Qasawa buried a clutch three to give SAU a four-point cushion.

Marian made one last push, closing the gap to one, 86-86, with less than a minute to play, but Hogans would step to the charity stripe and calmly sink his free throw attempts to ice the game.

Spring Arbor finished the afternoon shooting 49 percent (32-for-65) from the field and 83 percent (20-for-24) from the free throw line. The Cougars also out-rebounded the Knights 40-34.

Zuidema matched his career-best with 15 points while Barry and junior Thomas Starks chipped in 12 apiece. Starks also added 14 rebounds for his fifth double-double of the season.

Spring Arbor (7-21, 1-15 CL) will host Huntington University (13-15, 7-9 CL) on Tuesday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. before concluding the season at No. 11 Bethel College (21-7, 10-6 CL) on Saturday, Feb. 20.
