HUNTINGTON, Ind. –The Spring Arbor University women's basketball team was unable to find its offensive rhythm against Huntington University on Wednesday night, falling to the Foresters 70-52 at Platt Arena.
The loss dropped the Cougars to 15-14 overall and 7-10 in the Crossroads League, putting them in a three-way tie for fifth place in standings with Huntington (17-12, 7-10 CL) and Bethel College (12-17, 7-10 CL).
The two squads exchanged the lead several times in the early going of the first quarter, but a late 10-0 run by Huntington helped give the home team a 23-17 advantage heading into the second period.
Both sides struggled from the field in the second quarter combining to shoot just 5-for-22. An early basket from sophomore Faith Johnson trimmed the deficit to four, 23-19, but HU responded with five straight points to regain control. The Cougars made just one more field goal the rest of the period as the Foresters would take a 32-23 lead into halftime.
Huntington quickly increased its lead to 13 in the third quarter, and maintained a comfortable margin throughout most of the period. Spring Arbor battled its way back, though, getting buckets from junior Kylie Townsley and senior Jessica Mabry in the final minute to get within eight, 48-40.
Townsley and junior Rachel Driesenga fueled an early fourth quarter charge combining for six points to help close the gap to five, 53-48, with 7:27 remaining. However, the Forester defense would hold the Cougars scoreless over the next four minutes while cashing in for eight points on the other end of the floor to clinch the win.
Johnson finished with a team-high 15 points while Townsley followed with 12 points, five rebounds and three steals. Sophomore Autumn Goggin chipped in nine points and four boards, and Driesenga hauled in nine rebounds to go along with seven points and two blocks.
Spring Arbor will wrap up the regular season at home against Bethel on Saturday, Feb. 20 at 1 p.m. The contest will have major implications on postseason seedings with the Crossroads League Tournament set to begin next week.
