MISHAWAKA, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University men's basketball team went toe-to-toe with No. 13 ranked Bethel College in its final game of the season on Saturday. However, a lengthy run midway through the second half would be enough to propel the Pilots to a 108-89 win over the Cougars.
For the third straight game, junior Caleb Hogans scored over 30 points. Hogans knocked down a career-best nine three-pointers en route to a game-high 31 points while also adding five assists and three rebounds. Freshman Zach Medendorp and junior Thomas Starks also scored in double figures with 17 and 10 points, respectively.
The first half of action was very tight seeing five ties and six lead changes. Spring Arbor trailed by two, 31-29, at the 8:16 mark, but freshman Anthony Qasawa converted an old-fashioned three-point play to give the Cougars a one point advantage.
Bethel (22-8, 11-7 CL) responded though with nine unanswered points to grab its largest lead of the game, 40-32, with 5:11 to play in the first half. Hogans put a halt to the run, however, with back-to-back three-pointers. The Pilots would use another quick scoring spurt to go up by nine, 51-42, but this time it was senior Greg Hamilton and Medendorp with buckets to help close the gap.
After taking a 55-49 lead into halftime, Bethel opened the second half on a 7-2 run to increase the margin to 11. The two teams would trade baskets before Starks nailed a triple to trim the deficit to eight, 66-58, with 15:49 remaining. Bethel turned to one of the league's top players in Clay Yeo, and he would hit his next three shots to give the Pilots a comfortable 15 point cushion.
Spring Arbor continued to rally back, however, as Hogans answered back with consecutive three's to close the gap to nine, 73-64, at the 12:09 mark. Despite a valiant effort, the Cougars were unable to keep pace with one of the nation's most explosive offensive teams as the Pilots would use another 8-0 run to put the game out of reach.
Spring Arbor finished the afternoon shooting 43 percent (31-for-73) from the field while hitting a season-best 16 three-pointers.
Hamilton added nine points, three rebounds and two assists, while Qasawa chipped in eight points.
