SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Sophomore Bethany Balcer tallied two goals and an assist to lead the No. 1 ranked Spring Arbor University women's soccer team to a 5-0 victory over Trinity International University on Friday.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Spring Arbor 5, Trinity International 0
LOCATION: Cougar Soccer Complex – Spring Arbor, Mich.
RECORDS: Spring Arbor 2-0-0, Trinity International 0-1-0
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Spring Arbor wasted little time getting its first goal of the night with a strike from Balcer in the fifth minute. Following a failed clear attempt by Trinity International, the ball found the feet of Balcer and she fired a shot from just outside the 18-yard box that beat the diving goalkeeper.
- Balcer would have a hand in the Cougars second goal of the night as well. In the 21st minute, her pass over the top of the TIU defense put junior Aubrey Schierbeek one-on-one with the keeper, and Schierbeek would finish.
- In the second half, SAU added to its lead with three more goals. Balcer notched her second of the night with a header off a corner kick from junior Sarah Klunder in the 49th minute. Freshman Kaley Buck and sophomore Brooke Beaune would also find the back of the net – their first career goals.
- Senior Alyssa Joseph and freshman Emily Mindling each registered an assist on the night.
- The Cougars finished the match with 31 shots, including 14 on frame, while holding the Trojans to zero.
- Spring Arbor also held a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE
- With the win, Spring Arbor extended its winning streak to 21, and its shutout streak to 12 straight matches.
- The victory was also the 10th consecutive over a team either ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA Top 25 Poll.
- The Cougars bumped their record to 4-1 all-time against the Trojans.
- Balcer has scored in five straight matches dating back to last season.
- SAU's eight goals this season have been scored by six different players.
FOR THE FOES
- TIU goalkeeper Surina Lewandowski ended the night with seven saves.
QUOTES FROM HEAD COACH JASON CRIST
- "We moved the ball better tonight and were sharp with our attacking. I felt like we were able to attack in a dynamic manner and mixed things up a lot better than we did on Wednesday against Aquinas. We did a better job moving the ball and had more purpose to our possessions. We also did a nice job solving problems on the field, as Trinity is a very organized team and did a nice job complicating our play."
- "Our backs did a great job starting the offense for us, and our attack had a much better flow to it. We will enjoy a few days off as we do our best to get ready for another tough test in Siena Heights next Tuesday."
UP NEXT
Spring Arbor will travel to Adrian, Michigan to take on the No. 16 ranked Siena Heights University Saints on Tuesday, Aug. 30 beginning at 7 p.m.
