Volleyball earns sweep of Trinity International on final day of Early Bird

LIVONIA, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University volleyball wrapped up play at the Early Bird Tournament at Madonna University on Saturday. The Cougars opened the afternoon with a straight set win over Trinity International University before falling 3-0 to No. 17 Madonna University.

 
 

MATCH 1

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Spring Arbor never trailed in the first set. Kills from Courtney Kyser and Kasey Follis fueled an 8-3 run midway through the frame and the Cougars never looked back.
  • Trinity International grabbed an early 2-1 lead in the second set, but a quick 4-0 run – highlighted by a pair of kills from Rebekah Kujat – gave SAU a lead it would not surrender. Gabrielle Hilliard closed out the frame by serving up four straight points, including two aces.
  • Following a back and forth start to the third set, the Cougars used a 7-1 run to take control. The Trojans fought their way back, tying the score at 16-16, but a kill from Olivia Landis and an ace from Follis swung the momentum back in favor of SAU.
  • Kujat and Walker paced the offense with 12 and seven kills, respectively, while Kyser and Landis finished with five each.
  • Follis handed out 16 assists and Annica Stotz added 10 more. Follis also added four aces and six digs.
  • Leah Rose recorded a team-high 13 digs and Taylor Johnston followed with eight. Landis tallied four blocks while Sydney Ritz finished with three.
  • The Cougars limited the Trojans to a -.033 hitting percentage in the match while hitting at a .212 clip themselves.

FINAL SCORE: Madonna def. Spring Arbor 3-0 (25-14, 25-14, 25-19)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • In the first set, Spring Arbor was holding its own against 17th ranked Madonna until a 7-0 run gave the Crusaders an insurmountable lead.
  • Madonna carried that momentum into the second set as they hit .464 as a team to take a commanding two sets to none lead.
  • The Cougars went toe-to-toe with the Crusaders in the third set. With MU clinging to a slim three point advantage, 16-13, the home team claimed the next three points and held on for the win.
  • Kujat earned All-Tournament Team honors, finishing the weekend with 58 kills and a .313 hitting percentage. The senior outside hitter is now just 83 kills shy of reaching 1,000 for her career.
  • Ritz and Walker finished with five kills apiece, and Follis dished out a team-high 12 assists.
  • Rose led the defense again with 13 digs while Hilliard had seven and Stotz had six.
