HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Fresh off an upset win over No. 3 Saint Francis, the Cougars were looking for their second straight victory over a Top 10 ranked team when it traveled to No. 10 Indiana Wesleyan on Saturday.
  • Spring Arbor went toe-to-toe with the defending national champions in the first half as the two teams exchanged the lead 11 different times with no side ever leading by more than three points.
  • The Cougars went to Medendorp early and often through the first 20 minutes as the 6-foot-8 forward scored 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting.
  • Indiana Wesleyan went into halftime with a slim 35-32 advantage.
  • The host Wildcats looked as if they were ready to pull away in the second stanza. IWU opened the period on a 12-5 run to extend the margin to double digits, 47-37.
  • After falling behind by as many as 13 with less than five minutes to play, Spring Arbor came storming back. A three-pointer from Drew Zuidema ignited a 16-2 Cougar run where the SAU defense held one of the nation's top scoring teams to just one field goal over a four minute span. Paul Marandet scored nine points during the run.
  • Trailing by one with 30 seconds to play, Marandet came up with a key steal, which led to the go-ahead free throws from Medendorp.
  • Indiana Wesleyan had one last chance, and would make the most of it. Saikou Jallow's jumper with two seconds left was no good, but Grant Evans made the putback at the buzzer.

FOR THE COUGARS

  • Medendorp finished with a career-high 28 points going 10-for-14 from the field. He also added five rebounds and four blocks.
  • Marandet followed with 17 points and five assists. Tommy Hamilton chipped in seven points and six boards while Caleb Hogans and Zuidema contributed six points apiece.
  • Spring Arbor connected on 48 percent (27-for-56) of its attempts and went 78 percent (14-for-18) from the stripe. The Cougars controlled the glass, out-rebounding IWU 40-29.
