No. 2 Spring Arbor hands previously unbeaten IWU first loss

SPRING ARBOR, Mich.Bethany Balcer scored a pair of goals in the first 38 minutes as the No. 2 ranked Spring Arbor University women's soccer team upended previously unbeaten Indiana Wesleyan University 4-1 at the Cougar Soccer Complex Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Spring Arbor was able to grab control of the match early after a goal by Balcer in the 12th minute. Aubrey Schierbeek slipped a pass through to Balcer at the top of the 18-yard box and the junior from Hudsonville, Michigan blasted a shot past the IWU goalkeeper.
  • Schierbeek connected with Balcer again in the 38th minute. Balcer took a pass from Schierbeek, shook a defender, and beat the keeper to the far post.
  • Schierbeek added to the lead with a goal of her own from 30 yards out in the 59th minute.
  • Indiana Wesleyan narrowed the deficit after scoring off a long-range free kick less than two minutes later.
  • The Cougars put the match out of reach following a tally from Kaley Buck in the 71st minute.
  • Spring Arbor collected 33 shots on the night while limiting IWU to three. The Cougars also held a 12-0 advantage in corner kicks.
  • Goalkeepers Allison Keizer and Samantha Tracey made one save apiece.

  • Spring Arbor has won eight straight matches against Indiana Wesleyan dating back to the 2013 season.
