Men's Basketball holds off late push from IU Kokomo, extends win streak to 8

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University men's basketball team remained unbeaten to start the season as it held off Indiana University Kokomo 75-70 on Tuesday night inside the SAU Fieldhouse.

Spring Arbor led by 18 with eight minutes to play, but a late surge from Indiana Kokomo closed the gap to four. The Cougars were clutch from the free throw line down the stretch, though, to seal their eighth straight victory.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After the two teams traded baskets to open the contest, senior Zach Medendorp scored six straight points as part of a 14-2 run, and the Cougars would never trail again.
  • A bucket from Jeff Beckman gave SAU its largest lead of the half, 37-25, with 2:29 remaining in the period. Indiana Kokomo would sink a three-pointer at the buzzer though to trim the deficit to nine at the break.
  • Spring Arbor scored eight consecutive points to start the second half, boosting its lead to 17, 45-28. The Cougars led by as many as 22.
  • SAU appeared to have the game in hand up 63-45 with 8:00 left on the clock, but the visitors would make one last push. Trailing by 14, Indiana Kokomo used a 12-2 run to get within four, 69-65, with 2:15 to go.
  • Clinging to a three point lead with less than a minute to play, Drew Zuidema would go a perfect 4-for-4 from the free throw to seal the win.

 
 

FOR SPRING ARBOR

  • Medendorp finished with a game-high 21 points on 10-of-14 shooting. He also posted six blocks and five rebounds.
  • Zuidema recorded a season-high 15 points, hitting three triples, while also hauling in six boards. Tommy Hamilton also scored in double figures netting 14 points with seven rebounds and four assists. Paul Marandet and Luke Barber added eight points apiece while Marandet dished out seven assists.
  • Spring Arbor shot 54 percent (26-for-48) on the evening, including 6-for-14 from three-point range.
  • The Cougars out-rebounded Indiana Kokomo 44-34.

 
 

FOR INDIANA KOKOMO

  • Indiana Kokomo was led by Trent Elliott and Eddie Miles, who finished with 16 points each.
  • The Cougars were limited to 35 percent (26-for-73) shooting and 26 percent (9-for-34) from long range.
  • The visitors outscored Spring Arbor 21-7 off turnovers, forcing SAU into 20 giveaways. Indiana Kokomo also outscored the home team 21-4 on second-chance points.
