Career-high from Marandet not enough as Cougars fall to No. 3 Saint Francis

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Sophomore Paul Marandet scored a career-high 28 points, connecting on 11-of-18 from the floor, but Spring Arbor University's upset bid of No. 3 University of Saint Francis would come up short, falling 83-73 on Tuesday night.

The setback was the first of the year for the Cougars, snapping their eight-game winning streak – one shy of tying the program's all-time record.

THE BASICS

FINAL SCORE: Spring Arbor 73, #3 Saint Francis 83

LOCATION: SAU Fieldhouse | Spring Arbor, Mich.

RECORDS: Spring Arbor 8-1 (0-1 CL), Saint Francis 7-2 (1-0 CL)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Spring Arbor entered Tuesday's matchup with the Crossroads League's preseason favorite Saint Francis a perfect 8-0 on the year and looking to match the longest winning streak in program history with a victory.
  • The two teams traded blows through the first 15 minutes of the opening period, each answering the other with big shots.
  • Spring Arbor led 32-31 at the 6:31 mark, but big three-pointers from USF's Chandler White and Derek Hinen helped fuel a 10-0 Saint Francis run in the closing minutes of the half. The visitors took a 47-40 lead into the break.
  • Saint Francis extended its lead to double digits early in the second half, but the Cougars stayed within striking distance. A deep triple from Drew Zuidema pulled Spring Arbor within eight, 69-61, with 8:36 to play, but SAU was not able to slow down the high-powered USF offense.
  • Both teams shot extremely well from the field as Saint Francis finished shooting 55 percent (32-for-58), including going 12-for-20 from three-point range. Meanwhile, Spring Arbor shot 54 percent (28-for-52), knocking down 10 triples.

FOR THE COUGARS

  • In addition to his 28 points, Marandet dished out nine assists.
  • Zach Medendorp poured in 16 points with five rebounds and two blocks. Tommy Hamilton added 10 points and five assists while Zuidema finished with nine points.
  • The 83 points were the most given up by SAU this season.

FOR SAINT FRANCIS

  • Spring Arbor did not have an answer for Hinen and White as the duo combined for 51 points. Hinen scored 26 on 9-of-15 shooting while White had 25 going 10-for-12 from the field.
  • Bryce Lienhoop registered a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.
  • Saint Francis held the edge on the glass, out-rebounding SAU 30-23.
