Women's Basketball opens Chicago trip with win over Roosevelt

CHICAGO – The Spring Arbor University women's basketball team opened its Chicago road trip with a victory on Thursday night defeating Roosevelt University 58-55 in the CCAC vs. Crossroads League Classic, hosted by Roosevelt at the Goodman Center.

The win was the second straight for the Cougars as they snapped the Lakers' six-game winning streak.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Spring Arbor led by seven, 56-49, with 1:38 remaining in the game, but Roosevelt rallied scoring six unanswered points in less than a minute to get within one.
  • The host Lakers had a chance to take the lead in the final seconds, but the Cougars came up with a huge defensive stand and forced a turnover with only eight seconds left. Rachel Nelson would then knock down two clutch free throws to help clinch the victory.
  • Spring Arbor built a 12-6 lead late in the first quarter, but Roosevelt ended the period on a 4-0 run to trim the deficit.
  • The Lakers were able to grab their first lead of the game, 23-21, at the 3:32 mark of the second quarter following a pair of free throws. The home team would carry a three point lead into halftime, 25-22.
  • Roosevelt increased its lead to as much as six in the third quarter, but Spring Arbor clawed its way back, regaining the lead for good early in the fourth. Autumn Goggin sank two free throws and Nelson buried a three-pointer to put SAU on top 43-39 at the 8:29 mark.

 
 

FOR THE COUGARS

  • Nelson led the way for SAU with 12 points and came up one rebound shy of posting her second consecutive double-double as she finished with nine boards.
  • Goggin chipped in 11 points, five rebounds and three assists while Anne Marie Wright added nine points knocking down three triples. Sara White finished with seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds.
  • Spring Arbor had 14 second-chance points as the team hauled in 16 offensive rebounds. The Cougars won the battle on the glass, out-rebounding Roosevelt 46-42.
  • The Cougars also 16 points off the bench compared to just three by Roosevelt.

 
 

FOR THE LAKERS

  • Roosevelt was held to its lowest scoring total of the season while also being limited to its worst shooting performance so far this year, connecting on just 28 percent (18-for-64) of its shots.
  • Becca Bergman and Paige Gallimore paced the Lakers with 18 points apiece.
