CHICAGO – Senior guard Autumn Goggin joined the Spring Arbor University women's basketball team's 1,000 point club, but the Cougars were defeated 67-61 by Robert Morris University on the final day of the CCAC vs. Crossroads League Classic on Friday.
Needing just two points entering the contest, Goggin buried a three-pointer early in the first quarter to reach 1,000 points, becoming the 21st player in program history to reach the milestone.
THE BASICS
FINAL SCORE: Spring Arbor 61, Robert Morris 67
LOCATION: Goodman Center | Chicago, Ill.
RECORDS: Spring Arbor 5-9, Robert Morris 5-8
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Robert Morris jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but a three-pointer from Goggin at the 6:55 mark of the first quarter not only tied the score, but put the senior guard over 1,000 points for her career.
- The Eagles answered with a 12-0 run and would lead 18-9 at the end of the opening period.
- The Cougars responded after the slow start, outscoring the Eagles 16-10 in the second quarter. A triple from Rachel Nelson just before halftime trimmed the deficit to three, 28-25, at the break.
- Robert Morris stretched its lead back to double digits in the third quarter. Spring Arbor did not go away, however, as Gracie Cabana and Anne Marie Wright combined to hit four consecutive three's to put the Cougars on top 40-38 at the 4:14 mark.
- The two teams went back and forth the rest of the way. Spring Arbor trailed by just three, 64-61, with 43 seconds to play, but Robert Morris came up with a big defensive stand and SAU was forced to foul. The Eagles managed to hit enough free throws down the stretch to hold off the Cougars.
