Women's Basketball leads wire-to-wire in win over Olivet

OLIVET, Mich. – In its final game of the 2017 calendar year, the Spring Arbor University women's basketball team defeated Olivet College 88-61 in non-league action Saturday evening.

Behind a game-high 21 points from senior Autumn Goggin and the first career double-double from junior Ryann Laier, the Cougars led from start to finish to earn their third victory in their last four games.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Spring Arbor opened the contest on a 12-2 run. Gracie Cabana got the scoring started with a three-pointer and Anne Marie Wright capped the run with another triple.
  • The Cougars would lead 21-6 after the first quarter.
  • Olivet trailed by as many as 17 in the second quarter, but battled back to close the gap to five, 29-24, at the 3:36 mark. SAU responded with a quick 6-0 run with five of those points coming from Laier.
  • After going into halftime down 37-27, Olivet stayed within striking distance early in the third period. The Comets trailed by just six at the 7:57 mark of the quarter, but Spring Arbor broke the game wide open with a 16-2 run over the next four minutes.

 
 

FOR THE COUGARS

  • Goggin set a new school record for free throws made in a game, sinking 16 shots from the charity stripe on her way to a game-high 21 points.
  • Cabana finished with 17 points and six rebounds while Wright followed with 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting from three-point range.
  • Along with her double-double with 13 points and 10 boards, Laier added four assists.
  • Rachel Nelson came up just short of a double-double with 11 points and eight rebounds.
  • Spring Arbor shot 45 percent (25-for-55) on the night, including a 10-for-21 mark from behind the arc. The Cougars also capitalized at the stripe, hitting 80 percent (28-for-35) of their free throw attempts.
  • SAU out-rebounded Olivet 40-32 and scored 31 points off OC turnovers.

 
 

FOR THE COMETS

  • Shawnee Dame paced Olivet with 18 points.
  • The Comets were held to 36 percent (21-for-58) shooting and went just 4-for-23 from the three-point line.

 
 

UP NEXT

Spring Arbor returns to Crossroads League play with a trip to Goshen College (1-15, 0-4 CL) on Wednesday, Jan. 3 with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
