Women's Basketball picks up league win at Goshen

GOSHEN, Ind. – The Spring Arbor University women's basketball team earned its first Crossroads League victory of the season Wednesday night, defeating Goshen College 62-58 at Gunden Gymnasium.

The Maple Leafs closed a double-digit gap with under a minute remaining, but senior Autumn Goggin came through in the clutch going a perfect 10-for-10 from the free throw line down the stretch to help seal the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Spring Arbor and Goshen went back and forth all night as the contest featured five ties and nine lead changes.
  • The turning point came in the fourth quarter. Spring Arbor entered the period up 40-37 and held Goshen to just one field goal through the first seven minutes while the Cougars increased their lead to seven, 49-42, with 2:54 to play.
  • The Maple Leafs trailed by 10 with 50 seconds on the clock, and closed the gap to six, 58-52, following four straight points from Carley O'Neal.
  • Goggin put the game away at the charity stripe, however, converting all 10 free throw attempts she took in the closing minutes.

 
 

FOR THE COUGARS

  • Goggin led the way with a game-high 23 points. It was the fifth straight game Goggin scored in double figures and second consecutive 20-point performance.
  • Rachel Nelson narrowly missed a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds while Anne Marie Wright also finished with 11 points with three assists, three boards, and two steals. Gabby Barnett added five points and seven rebounds.
  • Spring Arbor shot 37 percent (20-for-54) from the floor and was 7-for-18 from three-point range. The Cougars were also 88 percent (15-for-17) from the free throw line.
  • SAU won the battle of the boards with 40 rebounds compared to Goshen's 32.

 
 

FOR THE MAPLE LEAFS

  • O'Neal paced Goshen with 15 points while Mariah Roe chipped in 10.
  • The Maple Leafs were held to 35 percent (21-for-59) shooting and were 6-for-18 from behind the arc.
  • Goshen outscored Spring Arbor in the post with 24 points in the paint compared to SAU's 14.
