Cougars suffer last minute loss to No. 9 IWU on Senior Day

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University men's basketball team celebrated senior day by honoring Caleb Hogans, Isaac Love, Thomas Starks, Xavier Prather and student assistant Ted Stowe. After a fast paced, physical battle, the Cougars fell short to No. 9 ranked Indiana Wesleyan University, losing by two late points in the final seconds.

With 30 seconds left, the Wildcats took the lead with an old-fashioned three-point play from Lane Mahurin, and would escape with the victory after SAU's last second shot to tie came up empty.

THE BASICS

FINAL SCORE: Spring Arbor 71, #9 Indiana Wesleyan 73

LOCATION: SAU Fieldhouse | Spring Arbor, Mich.

RECORDS: Spring Arbor 17-13 (9-9 CL)    Indiana Wesleyan 24-6 (14-4 CL)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Zach Medendorp was the first to score two minutes into the first half with a second-chance shot in the paint to start an extremely physical and fast paced conference matchup.
  • Neither team led by more than six points on the afternoon, highlighting the defensive efforts from both sides. The contest featured 12 ties and 17 lead changes.
  • Indiana Wesleyan grabbed a 13-8 advantage at the 13:01 mark, but a 14-4 run, capped by a bucket from Tommy Hamilton, put SAU ahead 22-17 with 8:19 to play in the opening half. Moments later, a three-pointer from Paul Maranet, would give the Cougars their largest lead of the day, 27-21.
  • The Wildcats answered with a run of their own to regain the lead. Two late free throws from IWU's Lane Mahurin would give the visitors a 34-33 lead at halftime.
  • Starks started the second half with energy, driving hard to the basket for a strong and-one, beginning a back-and-forth half of action.
  • In the final minute, Medendorp finished two crucial free throws to put the Cougars up 71-69 with 39 seconds left. However, Mahurin, who led the Wildcats with 28 points, could not be stopped in the paint and finished an old-fashioned three-point play to put IWU in front.
  • After missing a go-ahead three-pointer, SAU was forced to foul. Indiana Wesleyan made the first free throw attempt, but missed the second giving the Cougars one last chance. Marandet drove to the basket, but missed a contested shot and Starks' put-back attempt at the buzzer would not go.

FOR THE COUGARS

  • Medendorp had a huge night recording his first double-double of the season with 20 points and 10 rebounds. Marandet also finished with 20 points while also adding seven assists and six rebounds.
  • Starks and Jeff Beckman grabbed eight rebounds each – matching a season-best for Beckman.
  • The Cougar bench contributed 39 points.
  • Spring Arbor shot 43 percent (23-for-53) on the afternoon, as well as hitting 80 percent (21-for-26) of their free throw attempts.

FOR THE WILDCATS

  • Indiana Wesleyan was limited to its second-fewest points in a single game this season by the league's best defense.
  • The Wildcats finished shooting 42 percent (24-for-57) from the field, including just 6-for-21 from three-point range.
  • Indiana Wesleyan capitalized on SAU giveaways scoring 17 points from Cougar turnovers.
