Volleyball picks up first win of 2017 at Concordia Kick-Off Tournament

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The Spring Arbor University volleyball team opened the 2017 season by splitting a pair of matches at the Concordia University Kick-Off Tournament Friday. The Cougars fell in three sets to No. 24 Madonna University, but bounced back with a 3-1 victory over Concordia.

 
 

MATCH 1

FINAL SCORE: #24 Madonna def. Spring Arbor 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-23)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Spring Arbor got off to a fast start against one of the top teams in the nation. The Cougars opened up a 13-9 lead on the Crusaders in the first set. Madonna rallied back, however, to steal the opening set on their way to sweeping the match.
  • Alyssa Walker paced Spring Arbor with 10 kills and three aces. Sydney Ritz recorded eight kills while Courtney Kyser and Kasey Follis posted seven each. Annica Stotz and Emily Martin combined to hand out 36 assists.
  • The defense was anchored by freshman Stephaney Fifield, who collected 24 digs, while Kyser finished with five blocks.
  • Madonna's Karlie Kelly and Nicole Oestrike each recorded a double-double. Kelly tallied 14 kills and 11 digs while Oestrike had 13 kills and 14 digs.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • After dropping Friday's opener to Madonna, Spring Arbor responded with a convincing victory over host Concordia.
  • The Cougars had a well-rounded attack with Maggie Watson, Kyser and Walker posting eight kills apiece. Ritz followed with seven while Follis chipped in six. Stotz directed the offense with 24 assists.
  • SAU registered 10 aces, including three from Stotz and Fifield.
  • Fifield and Rose recorded double-digit digs with 27 and 17, respectively. Kyser dominated at the net tallying seven blocks.
  • Concordia was led by Alisha Anderson with 15 kills and 24 digs.

 
 

UP NEXT

Spring Arbor is right back in action tomorrow, closing out the tournament with matches against Siena Heights University and Mount Vernon Nazarene University. The Cougars are slated to play SHU at 12 p.m. and the match against MVNU will follow at 2 p.m.
