Balcer shatters goal record as No. 2 Spring Arbor tops Point Park

SPRING ARBOR, Mich. – Junior Bethany Balcer broke the Cougars' career goal scoring record as the No. 2 ranked Spring Arbor University women's soccer team captured a 3-0 win over Point Park University on Friday night at the Cougar Soccer Complex.

Balcer entered the match needing just one goal to become the program's all-time leading scorer. She netted the record setting goal in the 19th minute, but she did not stop tacking on two more tallies for her fourth career hat trick.

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • Spring Arbor put the pressure on Point Park early recording six shots in the first 15 minutes. The Cougars were able to break through in the 19th minute with Balcer's record-setting goal. Renee Broekhuizen delivered a corner kick to the near post that found the head of Balcer to give SAU a 1-0 advantage.
  • Less than six minutes later, the Cougars struck again. Sarah Klunder played a long ball into the box and, again, Balcer was there to head it past the Pioneer goalkeeper.
  • Balcer completed the hat trick in the 63rd minute finishing off a cross into the box from Aubrey Schierbeek.
  • Ashley Timmons and Allison Keizer combined for three saves in the shutout.
  • The Cougars outshot the visitors 26-6 and held an 8-1 advantage in corner kicks.

 
 

BEYOND THE BOXSCORE

  • Spring Arbor is 4-0 against Point Park since 2014, and has not surrendered a goal in the four meetings.
  • Tonight's shutout was the third straight to begin the 2017 campaign.
  • Balcer's 67 career goals surpasses the previous program record of 64 held by Karly Linton (2010-13).

  • Noel Hartle and Gabby Widman notched two shots apiece.
  • Goalkeeper Ashtyn Webb finished the match with four saves.
